Renault has unveiled the new version of the SUV Koleos at the Beijing Motor Show (25. April – 4. May) in Pekin. With its rugged optics, variable all - wheel - drive technology, innovative onboard infotainment system and spacious interior with a sporty touch, the crossover makes a good figure in the class. Renault plans for autumn the market launch of the off- roader in the Middle East.
Elegant and robust exterior.
The exterior of the redesigned Koleos is determined by muscular lines and distinctive chrome elements, including strips that run from the headlights along the entire lenght of the wings. The C-shaped headlights are available with full – LED technology. Large wheels of 19 inches and the aluminium roof bars give the crossover a sporty character.
Functional and spacious interior.
The SUV is based on the CMF- C/D (Common Module Family) platform for large sized vehicles. The interior features spaciousness, quality and functionality. The flagship will be the longest model in the Renault range with the lenght of 4,67m. Renault claims also “record braking” rear knee room of 289 mm. Koleos offers excellent visibility thank to elevated driving position, 150mm higher than in other sedans. The boot has 624 litres of the luggage capacity, which can by extended by folding the 60/40 split rear seat up to 1.690 litres.
Dynamic engines and switchable four-wheel-drive.
Engines are petrol and diesel aggregats, with power outputs ranging between 128bhp and 173bhp, with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. The all-wheel drive system is user- friendly, the driver can easly switch between 2WD, 4WD, AUTO and 4WD LOCK modes. At slow speeds in low-grip conditions, the 4WD LOCK allows the driver to select permanent all-wheel drive. Ground clearance of 213 mm as well as approach and departure angles of 19 and 26 degrees enhance the crossover’s all-terrain ability.
Advanced safety and great comfort.
Comprehensive equipment and a wide range of driver assistance systems guarantee enhanced safety and stability. Depending on the market, Koleos comes with following driver aids, available either as standard or as options: active emergency braking system, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition with excess speed warning, blind spot and safe distance warnings, tiredness detection, easy park assist and rear view camera. All assistance systems can be controlled via R-Link2, the infotainment system with 7 or 8,7-inches screen dominating the cabin. The comfort features onboard can include BOSE® surround sound system, heated steering wheel and windscreen, electronic seat adjustment and all-round parking sensors.
The second generation of Renault Koles will be available in 80 countries all over the world, starting in in China, Australia, Turkey and in the Middle East. The European premiere is expected at the Paris Motor Show in autumn. No pricing has been announced for the New Koleos, but it’s expected to be positioned close to the price of the available version.
Renault Koleos already had a few face-lifts, but now there will be a real revolution.
The second-generation Koleos is one of the most awaited Renault’s projects. It’s appearance is scheduled for 2016.
We can officially confirm, that crossover will be built on the platform of Nissan X-Trail, which features the Common Module Family architecture. The driver will have a much better view, because a car will be slightly higher than before. We also know, that it will have 17-inch wheels.
All-new Renault Koleos is rumoured to have the striking front grille design with C-shaped LED taillights, which look really nice. The line of the new model will be much softer than the previous one.
We don’t know many details yet, because we must wait for it’s debut.
We also know that Koleos II will have new digital instrument panel, a very modern front console, LED display with a lot of bottons – everything else is still a secret.
The buyers will be able to choose between gasoline and diesel-burning four-cylinder engines.
It was confirmed, that Renault Koleos II will be a very safe car – on all safety tests it received five stars.
Recently I had the opportunity to test my Renault Koleos in a difficult muddy terrain. In one of the last weekends of September I went with my family to the mountains. Because we like to experiment, we decided to choose unusual route with almost no traffic. Roadway at some point turned into a narrow road filled with muddy dirt.
Moreover, we were very surprised by downpour that changed the road dirt into a muddy river. And at that place, what again saved us from the oppression was the four-wheel drive. Koleos has worked really well in difficult muddy and bumpy terrain. The car seamlessly and smoothly overcame obstacles and bumps. It seemed very stable and practically with little to no effort would go over anything. In addition, the unpleasant noises from outside would not reach the interior, so my children could watch their favorite movie during the time of this crossing.
After this adventure on a dirt road we lost orientation, and if it would not be for installed Tom Tom navigation system we would probably be very lost. Fortunately, the weather got clearer, and in the right time we found our way. In conclusion, I must admit that my Renault Koleos has proven itself in difficult terrain, so I can safely call it a jeep. So far, it has not let me down, and I think that I will never be disappointed by it.
I was able to test my Renault Koleos in difficult conditions during my winter ski trip in the Italian Alps.
Driving this car has given me enormous pleasure and a sense of security to all of my passengers. Even though the trip took a long time it was not boring. Four-wheel drive saved me from the oppression not once but a few times. It also gave me the feeling of control in every situation. Particularly difficult moment of my trip took place at the end of the route, on a winding mountain road covered with a thick layer of snow.
While other vehicles could not cope with steep inclines and would slip on the icy snow, I easily drove to the top. Snow proved not to be dangerous for Renault Koleos. Similar situations have occurred many times on snow-covered roads or parking lots. Most cars couldn’t drive up the small hills because they would bury themselves in snow.
Renault Koleos didn’t have this problem, it sticks to the road well and drives forward bravely, mostly due to the electrically controlled 4-wheel drive, which in winter proved to be very useful.
Renault Koleos is not only an off-road car with a sporty character, but above all it is a universal car, economical and tailored to serve families well. The universal nature of Koleos is confirmed both by its dynamic qualities, as well as numerous pieces of equipment and the ingenious design of the cabin. Renault Koleos assets are plenty, but one of the most impressive is the spacious interior. In this spacious interior, seats can be freely adjusted in different directions, the great amount of shopping bags for the entire week can fit there too. It is also not a problem to drive several children with sports equipment like skis or surfboard in this car.
Beside shopping or luggage, everyone will find a convenient place, will be able to enjoy a comfortable seating and great facilities during a long journey. Power steering, cruise control, electric windows and mirrors, central locking, radio with MP3 and CD, AUX interface, air conditioning are some of the gadgets you can appreciate in Renault Koleos during those long, tiring journeys. When it comes to sports, skiers will be certainly interested in knowing that Koleos has a compartments for ski under the rear bench. However, if you want to pack a long object, it is better to increase the length of the loading to 2.60 m by folding backrest of the front passenger seat. This way it can also serve as a little table.
The safety of your journey in Koleos will be provided by 6 airbags and ESP dynamic stability control a system ES with traction uphill and speed control downhill. In addition we get adjustable headlights and ABS braking system. In conclusion we can safely say that the Renault Koleos is a family car and it is perfect for a pleasant traveling with loved ones. It is to be efficient on the highway and comfortable and functional in the city. Surely it cannot be called a demon of speed.

Recently, I got introduced to the new Renault Koleos, which made me so impressed that I had to learn something more about it. My attention was attracted primarily by its stately and elegant appearance. Its distinctive, silver front grille didn’t allow me to miss this car among other ones. That mainly makes Koleos very unique and hard to confuse with any other model. Koleos is the first SUV in Renault’s offer, which combines the advantages of both passenger cars and an off-road. It is both comfortable, convenient and practical. The interior of Koleos is very functional and spacious. The big advantage of this car is the possibility of transformation and so many features of its interior.
Attention should be also paid to Easy Break system, which with the use of one button lets you collapse passenger seat and thereby gain greater cargo area. The driver's seat is electrically adjustable and can be tailored to your individual needs. Very convenient option is also the Hands Free Keycard, which as the name suggests do not require you to carry other keys. You just need to take the card with you and Koleos doors will open by themselves. The engine will also start with one button.
There is a new version of Renault Koleos with a built Carminat Tom Tom 2.0 navigation that appeared recently on the market. I had the opportunity to use a similar Tom Tom navigation, and I think it is very useful if not necessary. Thanks to Tom Tom navigation we can automatically bypass traffic jams, find out the places where there is a heavy traffic or quickly and easily find places of our interest.
The Live feature contained in this navigation is something special, because through it we have an access to traffic information in real time. The Live feature informs us where we can come across heavy traffic jams in any given moment and warn us of speed cameras and dangerous places on the way!
In 2013, during the car show in Buenos Aires - Renault showed slightly altered face of the Koleos crossover. The changes were not great. As Koleos fan, I must admit that I am happy with that cause in the end it is impossible to greatly improve something that is close to perfection.
New Renault Koleos has a redesigned front end with a new bumper, headlights and grille. Blinkers were moved to the side mirrors, which gave them more interesting and modern character. Fans of car personalization will be delighted with the new bicolor model of aluminum rims. The feeling of mystery behind the wheel of Koleos can be provided by a tinted rear side and rear windows.
The interior of the car has hardly changed. It's still a classic elegance combined with modern and advanced electronics.
Oh changes, changes. For me, the main thing that remained me that Koleos is still the same great car were its two characteristics. It is an urban warrior and conqueror of the open road!
Is it worth buying used Koleos and what we should be aware of when buying one?
Renault Koleos has been present on the market for a long time now. During these few years, some of the owners probably thought of getting a newer model, so that we now have a great opportunity to buy a second-hand car. But is it worth to buy used Koleos?
Let's see what the usual drivers pay attention to and what we should look for when buying a second-hand model. Let me note at first that when deciding to choose Koleos, you are choosing a really decent car. Maybe not everyone will be delighted with its style, but that's not the point. SUV is a car that has to perform well in the city and off road so its usability is what counts, not the esthetics. It is just a matter of taste. I know people who are delighted with the appearance of my Koleos.
Renault Koleos is technically very close to the Nissan X-Trail. The result for the customer is the huge amount of electronics on board. Yes, it is very useful and helpful for the driver, but as it happens with electronics – they can be unreliable. Therefore, buying a used Koleos we should carefully check the electronic components. Please check everything from navigation, the central locking, ending with the wipers. Many users have reported a problem with random faults of ABS sensors, ESP, engine, steering column lock or a Hands Free system.
It is also worth to check leather items in more detail. If the previous owner cared about them, they should not be so bad. Body parts also may scare you with rusty streaks. This is really rare, however, chassis components can often surprise in an unpleasant way.
If a used Koleos that you are interested in has a diesel engine, you have to remember to check the Permanent Particle Filter. Probably after 150 000 kilometers, there will be a need to exchange it. Fortunately, serious engine failures happen to be so sporadic that we don’t have to mention them. Certainly, we will not have a problem with the acquisition of spare parts for the car. Renault Koleos has a lot of common parts with Laguna, X-Trail and Qashqai. Prices are not particularly high.
Now, hhich engine to choose? I know from experience that the best choice is the 20 dCi. This engine works best in SUV type of cars. It allows for dynamic driving with low fuel consumption (about 8 liters in combined cycle). This engine is stable and faults if ever, concern accessories. I also recommend to choose manual gearboxes as automatic one may be limited. Of course, if you have the opportunity to select the version 4 × 4, do it. In the end, SUV will be used not only in the city.
Accidents is a subject we try not to think about during our daily trips by car. If we start worrying whether we are going to be hit by a car, we would probably never got behind the wheel.
The fact that we do not normally think about such unpleasant situations does not mean that car designers do not think about them either. Mainly due to the fact that engineers from companies such as Renault care about our safety, we can focus on the road and the pleasure of driving.
Someone, however, must mobilize the producers to take care of the highest safety standards. Euro NCAP has been such an institution for many years now. For years, they were checking if car manufacturers care about the safety of drivers and their loved ones. Have you ever wondered how would your Koleos perform during an accident? Fortunately, Euro NCAP has proven it a few years ago.
The fact of the matter is that this Renault Koleos test was made for the 2008 version, but many of you may have a chance to drive this model. The good results (5/5 stars for passenger protection) made us feel more secure and lead us to believe that the newer version would do even better on that test. I hope that the Euro NCAP will test the new Koleos soon.
